A Matter of Life and Death festival is coming to Birmingham
8 May – 16 May 2021
Birmingham Sewers – contribute your makes to this city wide memorial event.
The Big Community Sew has joined forces with BrumYODO’s A Matter of Life and Death Festival and Birmingham Hippodrome to mourn the people who have died through Covid-19.
We are calling on sewers and knitters to create flags and other home-made tributes for a commemorative installation and memory trail to remember the thousands who have died from Covid-19 in the UK.
Sites across Birmingham are already being transformed into a tapestry of colour as trees are being yarn bombed with knitted, crocheted and sewn items to remember loved ones who have been lost during the pandemic. Memory trails in Kings Heath and Highbury parks have been established and sewers are being invited to bring flags and other tributes to pin to trees.
“Every community has lost people due to this terrible virus and we’ve not been able to properly mourn their loss,” explained Big Community Sew co-founder Marcelle Porteous.
“While social distancing will remain in place for some time, we wanted to create a space where people can come together to share their loss.
“Kindness has been demonstrated in many ways throughout the pandemic, none more so than by the work of the nation’s sewers in supporting the NHS and their communities. This is a communal act of kindness and remembrance to help people express and come to terms with their loss.”
